Atalanta Essay Example For Students
Atalanta Essay I. Summary of the StoryAtlantaHer father had wanted a son, and when Atalanta was born, he rejected her and ordered to put her out on the mountains, and let her die. So the servants put her out on the mountains. There a she-bear came along, and took a a fancy to the strange little thing, and fed her with her own milk. By and by some haunters passed that way, and found her, and saved her, and brought her up. She became a hard woman, like her hard father, and like the hard life she was force to lead. She cared for no wild beast of the forest. Even when two terrible Centaurs attacked her, she cared nothing, but killed them both. When she grew up, she found out her father, and came to live in his house. She made a great name for herself, in running and wrestling and other manly sports; she even wrestled with Peleus, and beathim. She must have been a handful to manage; so her father soon became tired of her, and did his best to find a husband who would relieve him of his troublesome daugther. At first she would not hear of a husband; but at last she agreed, on certain condition. The condition were, that if anyone wanted to marry her, he must ran a race with her, if he lost the race, he was to lose his life. But she was so beautiful, that many young man were willing to try, even on those terms; many did try, and failed, and they were put to death. One young man, named Milanion, a fine young fellow laugh at this because accdg. To him there are plenty of girls in the country and he will not risk his neck for one, no matter how beautiful she may be. So, some young men invite him to the next race, as if he have not seen her and he come along with them. There they stood at the starting post: Atalanta, like Artemis herself, as beautiful and as hard; Accdg. To other books, she wear a shining buckle clasped her robe around her neck; her hair was simply dressed, caught in a knot behind. An ivory quiver hung upon her left shoulder and in her hand was a bow. Thus was she attired. As for her face, it seemed too maidenly to be that of a boy, and too boyish to be that of a maiden that was she looked like. And the young man, full of strenght and grace, and confident that he would win. Off they went: he was quick on his feet, but nothing to Atalanta, who sped off like the wind, and easily came in first. Then the young man was led off to his death. But you wouldbelieve it, no sooner Milanion set eyes on Atalanta, then he fell in love as deeply as the rest. He thought he had never seen anything so beautiful as Atalanta, and on the spot he declared that he would try his luck. Atalanta herself was sorry, as she saw this fine young man. Somehow she fell in love with Milanion too, and she did her best to dissuade him. Why she did not accept him at once, if she liked him, I do not know; but perhaps she felt that it would make her look small before the world, and she did not really love him enough, as yet. So a day was fixed for the new race. Milanion was not quite so cheerful when he got away. He did not feel so sure he would win; and now that he could not see her, he did not feel so sure she was worth it. But he felt he could not back out of the challenge. Then he prayed to the goddess Aphrodite to help him, and she heard his prayer; for she did not like this hard maiden, who made light to the goddess of love. She had a wonderful tree in her grove, which bore golden apples; three of these apples she picked, and gave them to Milanion, and told him what to do. .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec , .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .postImageUrl , .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec , .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec:hover , .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec:visited , .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec:active { border:0!important; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec:active , .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u22f02d460308ef9795f9183461c24aec:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: In Cold Blood: Death Penalty EssayThe day came. There were crowd of people to see the race: the king was there, with his court; Atalanta was there, girl in a short tunic, like Artemis, and ready to run. Milanion came, with the golden apples tucked into the corner of his tunic. They made rather a bulge, but no one noticed it in all that excitement. The two runners stood at the starting-point: the signal was giventhey were off. Atalanta did not run as swiftly as usual, for her own heart weekened a little, to see this beautiful young man running for his life. For a little time, they ran neck and neck; but the ardour of the race took hold of Atalanta, and she shot ahead. Then Milanion pulled out one of his apples, and rolled it ahead to Atalanta. She caught sight of the bright thing, and hesitated, and stopped in her course to pick it up. Milanion passed her, and sped away at ful of speed. But Atalanta tucked her apple into her bosom, and off she went again; she soon passed Milanion, and left him behind her. Now Milanion pulled out another apple out another apple, and sent it rolling a little to one side. Once more Atalanta saw the apple, and darted away from the course to pick it up; once more Milanion ran ahead, and at this time he gained a good deal of ground. But the pace was telling on Milanion. He began to pant, and his breath came dry from his throat; run as he would, he would not keep ahead, and now he took out his last apple. This time, he threw it as hard as he could, right away to one side, but so that Atalanta could see it. And as before, Atalanta darted in pursuit, and ran right out of the course until she was able to catch it, and tucked it way with the rest. They were not yet at the end of the race, and Atalanta began to gain Milanion, but Aphrodite was watching, unseen, and she made the apples grow heavier and heavier, until Atalanta felt as if she were carrying a weight of lead in her bosom. She went slower and slower, and Milanion kept ahead, and won the race. Then there were great rejoicings, and Atalanta was no less pleased than the rest, although she did not say much about it. So they were married, and they deserved to live hapily ever after, but unluckily they did not. For they gave offence to Zeus, and he turned them into a pair of lions. Perhaps after all, Atalanta was more happy as a lioness than she would have been as a woman, but I do not know longer her side of the story, because she could no longer tell it. II. Characters of the storyA. Major CharactersAtalantaDaugther of King Schoeneus of Boetian. A woman raised by a she-bear and soon the hunters. She is defined as a manlike, cold- hearted and known for her bravery and str enght that made her more lovelier and more desirable than any other women aside for beautiful face. MilanionSon of Amphidamas, a fine young man who fell in love with Atalanta and soon marry her because of Aphrodites help. AphroditeThe goddes of love and beauty, Roman counter part Venus. She helped Milanion to win the footrace in order to marry Atalanta. B. Minor CharactersZeusSupreme diety in Greek mythology. Roman counter part, Jupiter. He turned Atlanta and Milanion into a pair of lion because they violated the sanctuary. King PeleusKing ofMyrmidons in Thessaly. A great hero Peleus was beaten up by Atalanta in a wrestling mania. King SchoeneusKing of Boeotia. Biological father of Atalanta. Before, he wanted to have a son to establish the good reputation he maintain but when Atalanta was born, he ordered to put her on the mountains and let her die. But later, when Atalanta found him and lives with him- he was able to accept her so much because she was so famous and outstayed all masculine and sportsman events. III. Settings of the story Island of BeotiaLocation were all this happensIV. CommentsAtalanta is a classical mythology. It is unique because of it enables me to see one side of myself in the character of Atalanta. This story Tells about a hard woman who refused to marry a man who cannot outdistance her in a footrace. The most touching part for me was that when Atalanta was weakened by her own heart to see the young man running for his life(at the race). My favorite character in the story is Atalanta, because I saw a little side of me in her(maybe Im just carried away). My most unwanted character was her father, King Shoeneus, because he never cares for her daughter at all, all he wants is fame, fame and fame-thats why in the end he accept Atlanta. .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 , .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .postImageUrl , .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 , .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2:hover , .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2:visited , .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2:active { border:0!important; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2:active , .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2 .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u802a4e0b6b677e7bc5fd61921c93d5d2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Position Paragraph Assignment EssayMy favorite lines was when King Schoeneus said Whats the use of a girl to me? Put her on the mountains and let her die. The moral value of the story is probably dont ever, ever take down a list of angers-forgive and forget as Atalanta did when she found her father. IV. RecommendationIf you ask me to rate this beautiful story, I give it a rate of 10, because it just great Maybe because its just natural for all myths. I truly recommend this for all teenagers-particularly for the girls because it just for us!(girls) ^o^x!. Bibliographyal ye gods, W.H.D. Rouse,Mythology Essays

Young children should not watch TV. Discuss. Essays - Television
Young children should not watch TV. Discuss. "Television: A bad influence for children" Nowadays, it is an indisputable fact that television has become a popular form of entertainment. Children are growing up immersed in various digital formats and they are exposed to media, in all forms, including television. This can influence how children fell, learn, think and behave. A significant disadvantage of children watching television is the increased risk of obesity. Excessive use of TV not only leads to weight gain, but it also increases the risk of various health problems. A further criticism is that TV broadcasts content that is unsuitable for young people such as violence or porn. These can badly disturb the process of mental development and make children less sensitive. Moreover advertisements addressed to children create an unreal world and young viewers are unable to realize that. They are manipulated into believing that consumption of alcohol and cigarettes is okay. Furthermore social and attention problems are more likely to be seen in children who watch a lot of TV. Lastly watching TV occupy time that otherwise could be spend on more beneficial entertaining options and recreational activities like sports, foreign language classes or other artistic hobbies. Summing up parents should try to limit how much television and what types of programs their children watch. They have to solve this problem by introducing their children to alternative activities and keep them out of the harm's way.

7 Active Reading Strategies for Students
7 Active Reading Strategies for Students Active reading techniques can help you stay focused and retain more information, but its a skill that takes time and effort to develop. Here are some strategies to help you get started right away. 1. Identify New Words Most of us develop a bad habit of glossing over words that are vaguely familiar to us, often not even realizing we are doing so. When youà read a difficult passage or book for an assignment, take a few moments to really observe challenging words. You will likely find that there are many words that you think you know- but that you canââ¬â¢t really define. Practice by underlining every noun or verb that you cannot replace with a synonym. Once you have a list of words, write the words and definitions in a logbook. Revisit this log several times and quiz yourself on the words. 2. Find the Main Idea or Thesis As your reading level increases, the complexity of your material will likely increase as well. The thesis or main idea may no longer be provided in the first sentence; it may instead be located in the second paragraph or even the second page. Finding the thesis is crucial to comprehension. Youââ¬â¢ll need to practice finding the thesis of the text or article each time youre reading. 3. Create a Preliminary Outline Before you dive into reading the text of a difficult book or chapter, take some time to scan the pages for subtitles and other indications of the structure. If you donââ¬â¢t see subtitles or chapters, look for transition words between paragraphs. Using this information, you can craft a preliminary outline of the text. Think of this as the reverse of creating an outline for your essays and research papers. Going backward in this way helps you absorb the information you are reading. Your mind will, therefore, be better able to ââ¬Å"plugâ⬠the information into the mental framework. 4. Read With a Pencil Highlighters can be overrated. Some students commit highlighter overkill and end up with a sloppy multi-colored mess. Sometimes itââ¬â¢s more effective to use a pencil and sticky notes when you write. Use the pencil to underline, circle, and define words in the margins, or (if youââ¬â¢re using a library book) use sticky notes to mark a page and a pencil to write specific notes to yourself. 5. Draw and Sketch No matter what type of information youââ¬â¢re reading, visual learners can always create a mind map, a Venn diagram, a sketch, or a timeline to represent the information. Start by taking a clean sheet of paper and creating a visual representation of the book or chapter youââ¬â¢re reading. Youll be amazed by the difference this will make for retaining information and remembering details. 6. Make a Shrinking Outline A shrinking outline is another useful tool for reinforcing the information that you read in a text or in your class notes. To make a shrinking outline, you need to re-write material you see in your text (or in your notes). While it is a time-consuming exercise to write out your notes, it is also a very effective one. Writing is a necessary part of active reading. Once you have written out a few paragraphs of material, read it over and think of one keyword that represents an entire paragraphââ¬â¢s message. Write that keyword in the margin. Once you have written several keywords for a long text, go down the line of keywords and see if each word will prompt you to remember the full concept of the paragraph it represents. If not, re-read the paragraph and choose a more accurate keyword. Once every paragraph can be recalled by a keyword, you can begin to create clumps of keywords. If necessary (e.g. if you have a lot of material to memorize) you can reduce the material again so that one word or acronym helps you remember the clumps of keywords. 7. Read Again and Again Science tells us that we all retain more when we repeat a reading. Itââ¬â¢s good practice to read once for a basic understanding of the material, and read at least one more time to grasp the information more thoroughly.

Modal and Phraseological Verbs in Italian
Modal and Phraseological Verbs in Italian In addition to the Italian auxiliary verbs essere and avere, Italian modalà and phraseological verbs also serve as support to other verbs. Italian phraseological verbs (verbi fraseologici)à includeà stare,à cominciare,à iniziare,à continuare,à seguitare,à finire, andà smettere,à which, when used before another verb (mostly in theà infinitive, but also as aà gerund), define a particular verbal aspect. Read on to learn more about these important Italian helping verbs. Modal Verbs The Italian modal verbs are dovere, potere, volere- meaning, respectively: necessity, possibility, and volition- they precede the infinitive of another verb and indicate a mode, such as in the following examples. The sentences show how to use these three verbs in Italian, followed by the type of mode in parentheses, followed by the English translation: Sono dovuto tornare (necessit)- I had to come back (need).Non ho potuto aiutarlo (possibilit).- I could not help him (possibility).Rita vuole dormire (volont).- Rita wants to sleep (will). To underscore the close link between the modal verb and the verb that follows it, the former usually takes the auxiliary of the second: Sono tornato. / Sono dovuto (potuto, voluto) tornare.Ho aiutato. / Ho potuto (dovuto, voluto) aiutare. This translates in English to: Im back. / I had to (have, wanted to) return.à I helped. / I have (had, wanted to) help.. It is common to encounter modal verbs with the auxiliary avere, even when the governing verb requires the auxiliary essere, as in: Sono tornato. / Ho dovuto (potuto, voluto) tornare.- Im back. / I had to (have, wanted to) return. Modal Verbs Followed by Essere In particular, the modal verbs take the auxiliary verb avere when they are followed by the verb essere: Ho dovuto (potuto, voluto) essere magnanimo.- I had to (have, wanted) to be magnanimous. The presence of an unstressed pronoun, which can be placed before or after the servile verb, has an effect on the choice of the auxiliary verb, such as: Non ho potuto andarci.à Non sono potuto andarci.Non ci sono potuto andare. Non ci ho potuto andare. This transelates in English to: I could not go there. I am not able to go there.à I could not go there. I could not go there. In addition to dovere, potere, and volere, other verbs such as sapere (in the sense of being able to), preferire, osare, and desiderare can also support the infinitive forms: So parlare inglese. Preferirei andarci da solo.Non osa chiedertelo. Desideravamo tornare a casa. In English, this translates to: I can speak English. Id rather go alone.à Do not dare ask. We wanted to go home. Phraseological Verbs To understand phraseological verbs, its helpful to view how they are used in context, in brief prases. Each of the following phases in Italian uses a phraseological verb, followed by the type of action being described, followed by the translation of the phrase and type of action in English: Sto parlando (azione durativa) - Im talking aboutà (action durative)So per parlare (azione ingressiva)- I know from talkingà (ingressive action)Cominciai a parlare (inizio dellazione)- began to talkà (onset of action)Continuai a parlare (proseguimento dellazione)- continued to talkà (continuation of)Smisi di parlare (fine dellazione)- I stopped talkingà (end of action) Additionally, various phrases and expressions are used idiomatically in Italian: essere sul punto di, andare avanti, a etc.- be about to,à go ahead, andà etc.

The Kent State University Shootings And The Boston Massacre Essay
The Kent State University Shootings And The Boston Massacre - Essay Example These lines printed in bold on the front pages of national newspapers and magazines dated May 5, 1970, conveyed the essence of what had happened during Kent students' protest against the war in Vietnam and the U.S. invasion to Cambodia. The Cambodian invasion took place in late April of 1970. According to the statement of President Nixon broadcasted nationwide on April 30, 1970 the goal of the invasion was to attack the Viet Cong headquarters located on Cambodian territory. The first protests followed the next day after Nixon's statement. Hundreds of American students, whose anti-war sentiment was the highest as compared with other social groups protested in their campuses across the country. Kent State University campus was also involved in the anti-military demonstrations. The protests peaked on Monday, May 4, when several hundreds students of Kent State University gathered at noon to declare their disapproval of the U.S. military policies in Asia2. By strange coincidence the Kent State University shootings bore frightening resemblance to another prominent event of the U.S. history, namely the Boston Massacre of 1770. The Massacre occurred on March 5, 1770 between a group of Boston citizens and British troops. A group of British soldiers shot five colonists during a public protest action against the Townshend Acts and the excessive presence of British troops in Boston and New York. The soldiers, struck by snow and ice balls thrown by the crowd, fired into the demonstrants killing five and wounding half a dozen people3. The first thing one might notice about these two events is striking similarity of dates and numbers. Separated by almost exactly two centuries both shootings occurred in the spring, and both cases produced nearly the same number of victims. In-depth analysis of the historical background of the shootings, comparison of the implications produced by them and examination of their impact on the society reveals even more interesting details. The second half of 20th century was marked by a series of events that determined the modern visage of American society. Nuclear disarmament movement and Civil rights movement in the USA of the late 1950s - early 1960s, Anti-Vietnam War movement in the USA and worldwide of the mid 1960s - early 1970s, students movement in the USA of the mid 1960s - early 1970s, women's movement in the USA that began in the late 1960s and soon spread to Europe - these are only most notable examples of such events. The shootings at Kent University went down in history as the turning point of the Vietnam War era. In those days the nation was torn by deep cultural and political conflict. Richard Nixon won the 1968 election promising to end the Vietnam War, but failed to stick to his promise. Instead, the first draft lottery since World War II was announced followed by the invasion into Cambodia that made the war even more intensive. Thousands of American students responded to the increased risk of being d rafted by protests and demonstrations setting the stage for the Kent University shootings4. The historical background of the Boston Massacre was characterized by a number of similar features, though the context was totally different. Political and economic

Group Leadership Project Reflection - Essay Example In short, the male-superiority power. Even now in so many countries of the world, especially the third-world countries, women are beaten and thrown in dark rooms. This has given men the nerve to regard women as the followers and not as the leaders. Nevertheless, the women of today have fought tooth and nail to change that ideal and establish themselves also as the leaders. They have same or even better qualifications as men.
